Power tools come in a number of varieties. Some, for heavy duty tasks,
while others are better for general use. Most tools will generate some
amount of debris, but some more than others. Each tool has its own set
of precautions, but, no matter if you're a professional or amateur,
general safety - combined with common sense - should be used whenever
you pick up a power tool and turn it on.
Before you even plug in a
tool, consider the surrounding work space. Is it well-lit? Is it clean?
If the area meets neither of these standards, clean it and find
adequate lighting before turning on the tools. Additionally, only those
skills to use tools should be in the work area. Children and pets, in
particular, should not be anywhere near. If an extension cord must be
used, make sure it's the correct length for the space you're in. A work
area, as well, should always have one first aid kit.
As soon as
you use power tools, always examine the body and cord. Although damages
aren't common, a frayed cord or cracked body can happen over time. If
either of these features or any additional damage is spotted, don't turn
on the tool and, instead, have it repairs or discard it. If you
purchase a new tool, however, always read the instructions first. Many
tools have similar functions, but you should be aware of its individual
workings before using it for any task.
Personal safety must
always be first whenever power tools are used. This means that ear plugs
and safety glasses should be used at all times. Ear protection,
especially, should be strong enough to mute the sound from the tool but
not strong enough that you can't hear others around you. To keep at
least a hand free, use a vise or clamp when working and if tools come
with guards, always use them. Once you're finished with the tool, always
turn it off with the "off" switch instead of simply unplugging it.
