Do Your Power Tools Need Maintenance?

Have you every opened your tool shed, glanced at your tools, and realized that they look, kind of, old? Even if you have a difficult time admitting that your power tools don't work as well as they used to, you can still fix them and keep them up to par. In general, all surfaces need to be kept sharp, while various blades, bits, and rubber parts may need to be replaced at some point.

When owning a set of power tools, you should make an effort to keep all surfaces clean. Particularly as saws are concerned, buildup from the material being cut - especially wood - can form, and this makes the blade less powerful. All saw blades should be polished and cleaned regularly, and both blades and bits should be cleaned with a pitch and resin remover if they're often used with wood.

Other surfaces are stationary, such as those for table saws. These surfaces also need to be cleaned, but they also corrode easily. To prevent corrosion on a table saw's blade, apply a light lubricant directly to the blade's surface.

Certain tools may need regular replacements. More often, these are tools that have a rubber or elastic component, such as a belt or tires. These parts can crack or lose flexibility over time and cause the tool to not work as well. For such power tools, these parts need to be replaced. But rubber isn't the only material needing a replacement, and tools with metal parts - saws, in particular - will need new blades, as well. While using higher-quality blades is recommended for a longer lifespan, any dull or damaged blades should be replaced. Professionally sharpening a blade, however, may be beneficial for certain types of saws.
